Yes everyone should be treated equally in all walks of life. Yes everyone should be treated equally, no one’s race, religion, background, economic status, political views, or sexual orientation should matter in this world. Everyone should have the same opportunities and rights as everyone else, and no one should get more rights than anyone else. Everyone should be equal under the law and have equal rights.

The United States of America was built on a constitutional principle of “our laws are equal and no one should be discriminated against based on gender, race, national origin, age, disability or religion.” If those were the founding principles that the United States stands for then why is everyone treated differently? Why is there no one person, group or institution that is above the law?
What about equal treatment in sports, or in politics? You would think that the athletes in the Olympics would demand an equal opportunity or treatment as the other athletes and those that are in politics would demand an equal treatment as the politicians. But, no, it’s just the people in the United States who believe that everyone should be treated equally, which is why we have all these problems with unequal treatment in our schools, in our society and even in our military. Well, a group of students have taken this philosophy to the next level by making a petition to have “everyone” to be treated equitably, which is also called “egalitarianism.”
Well, the problem with that essay is that they used the word “egalitarianism” twice. Everyone should be “treated equally” and it is an oxymoron to call someone who favors one gender over another “egalitarian” or someone who believes that both males and females should have the same rights, opportunities and choices a “egalitarian” believe. So, I asked them to please define what they meant by that phrase.
The students were unable to give me a definition, so I asked if they knew where the term came from. The answer they gave me was that it was derived from “egalitists” which is a group which opposes gender equality and sees women as being more vulnerable to the male sex. A similar argument was used to open up the University of Michigan’s African-American Culture and History department to everyone. In the United States we are all equal. We all started out on the same foot and we are all created equal. Those who believe that people are equal regardless of gender, race, disability, or sexual orientation are simply ignoring the very basic definition of what constitutes “being treated equally”.
If everyone is to be treated equal, then isn’t that just like saying that all men are male and all women are female? No, it isn’t. Those who say that one gender is favored due to their gender are discriminatory by their own statement. Those who say that one gender is discriminated against based upon their gender are again, discriminatory. Those who say that all persons are to be judged according to their gender are also discriminating, yet those statements are made in a positive light rather than a negative one.
